Robotics and WPVA Take Lead in Assisting Hurricane Victims

In an effort to help the masses of displaced residents
of the Gulf Coast, Windermere Preparatory School’s
robotics team created a high-tech flyer to be sent home
in backpacks, scrounged up collection boxes, and showed
up at morning drop-off for three days in a row, collecting
more than $1,200 from WPS students, parents and faculty
members. The money was immediately sent off to the relief
effort.
The robotics team is only one of the many groups taking
the initiative to assist in the relief effort. The Windermere
Volunteer Parents Association (WPVA), our stellar parent
support group, is also taking a prominent role in assisting
the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Windermere Prep’s
robotics team, known as Lakerbotix, designs and builds
a functioning robot which they operate as part of an
international robotics competition sponsored by the
FIRST organization (For Inspiration and Recognition
of Science and Technology). In addition to encouraging
students to pursue careers in science and technology,
FIRST strongly urges teams to engage in community service.
At each regional competition, the organization hands
out awards to those teams that have made an extraordinary
effort to reach out to other schools, community groups
and citizens in need. Lakerbotix is proud to have been
able to contribute to the disaster relief effort; as
their flyer stated, “Every little bit helps.”
