Windermere Prep Names Two Word Power Challenge Winners

Christine Prevel and Justin Eng

Windermere Prep seventh grader Justin Eng and eighth grader Christine Prevel recently were named WPS Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge winners. After winning their respective grade-level competition, both students await the results of a written test to see if they will move on to the state competition this spring.

The Reader's Digest National Word Power Challenge is an educational outreach program of “Reader's Digest” magazine.

The Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge is a vocabulary contest designed for schools nationwide through grade eight, according to Mary Beth Davies, WPS Language Arts Master Teacher and Form Master.

Up to one hundred of the highest-scoring eligible students in a state or territory advance to the state level. The first-place winner from each state contest advances to the national level. On the first day of the National Championship, contestants will take part in the Preliminary Competition, with Ten students advancing to the Final Round Competition.

The Final Round Competition will be held on the second day of the National Championship and be taped for later airing. Final Round contestants will compete for the following prizes: First place: A $25,000 college scholarship, plus Reader's Digest products for the student's school; Second Place: A $15,000 college scholarship, plus Reader's Digest products for the student's school; and Third Place: A $10,000 college scholarship, plus Reader's Digest products for the student's school.
