Windermere Prep Students Achieve Top Scores on National Latin Exam

            Twenty-three Windermere Prep Upper School students received awards of outstanding merit on the 2007 National Latin Exam (NLE). Two Eighth graders and three seventh graders achieved the Summa Cum Laude Award (the highest honor awarded). Eighth graders Helene Brun, and Bianca Trifoi, and seventh graders Kira Ambrose, Tansel Ismail, and Tyler Santostefano each earned a gold medal and a certificate of merit.

            Ninth grader Christine Prevel and eighth graders Manha Mohiuddin, Scott Stratman, and Ashley Bowdoin garnered Magna Cum Laude Achievement Awards for their scores on the test. Receiving Cum Laude ranking were: tenth grader Zach Demko; eighth graders Manha Mohiuddin, Scott Stratman, Ashley Bowdoin; and seventh graders Natalia Schneider, Rohith Sompalli, Sydney Waitz, Ryan McKercher and Hania Mumtaz.

            Offered under the joint sponsorship of the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League, the NLE is a forty-question, multiple-choice exam which assesses a student’s proficiency in vocabulary, grammar, history, mythology, and culture in Latin I-VI studies. Sixty-six Windermere Prep students were among the over 149,000 students from all fifty states and thirteen foreign countries to participate in this examination.

 According to WPS Latin teacher Sandra Enscoe, the National Latin Exam is considered the most difficult of the standardized examinations in Latin language and culture, with questions on subjects that students may not have even been taught yet.
