The goal of the music education program at Windermere Prep is to give students the skills and knowledge that will assist them in developing an appreciation of music that will last a lifetime. The music curriculum provides students the opportunity to be exposed to a wide variety of music whether they are enrolled in general music class, chorus or band.
Students enrolled in general music class will study musical concepts through movement, singing, and playing instruments. The curriculum includes units on major composers like Beethoven and Bach, the study of various genres of music such as jazz and opera, multicultural music, orchestral instrument recognition, and recorder playing. Students also begin to learn the language of music with the introduction and study of notes and rests. Third and fourth grade students add a technology element to their music classes by independently studying music theory through interactive music software. All students in PK3 through second grade attend music once a week for the entire school year. Students in third and fourth grade attend music every day for one quarter.
Starting in Kindergarten students have the opportunity to take private piano lessons during the school day. In addition, students may begin private violin lessons during the school day beginning in the second grade.
Students have the opportunity to begin band in the fifth grade and may continue through graduation. Students may join anytime during their academic career. Students who opt to enroll in band participate in large group rehearsals, a technology segment and private lessons. Instrumentalists give several concerts per year and participate in area festivals. Students enrolled in band will be financially responsible for rental/purchase of equipment used and needed. There is an also an added expense for private lessons for this class.
Students in fifth grade and above who elect to take chorus have the opportunity to perform a variety of musical styles from traditional choral works, to Broadways show tunes, to pop songs. There is a focus on proper singing techniques including breathing and diction. Each student is an active participant in the ensemble by participating in concerts, and holding leadership positions within the group.
